Allium oschaninii also known as Griselle, they are considered by some to be the only “true shallot”. These only reproduce clonally through bulb division and do not produce seeds, flowers or aerial bulbils. Smaller than seed grown shallots, small bulbs have tough brown skin that takes some careful knife skills to remove. Encased in the skin is a beautiful pinky purple tear shaped bulb. Used fresh or sautéed, this will add a delicious flavour to any meal.

Plant in the fall as you would garlic. Sprouts will emerge after snow is gone in spring and one bulb will multiply into 6-12 bulbs the following year. Plants “lie down” or flop over when ready to harvest about mid July here in Southwestern Ontario.
